AP Chemistry Summer Assignment 2014-15

Greetings!  Welcome to AP Chemistry!

You will complete a series of summer assignments due at various points through out the summer.  The purpose of the assignments are to keep you fresh on your first year chemistry material.
Immediately go to the library and check out an AP Chemistry book for the summer!
You are welcome to do all of the assignments immediately.  You do not need to wait until the last minute to do them. :)  I rarely grant extensions for this summer assignment.  All of the assignments will be available within the next week so if you know you are going to be gone during a deadline, plan accordingly.  These assignments are your first grades for the new school year.

I am available via email for help (scool@muhsd.org), however, I will be in Asia for 6 weeks and will be dealing with a considerable time difference (15 hours).  Please take that into consideration when you are waiting for a reply.

Memorize your Polyatomic ions!

Every year I tell students to memorize these and they don't believe me how important this is.  Be different, get them memorized. The sooner you have them memorized, the better off you'll be.

DUE Date #1 - Friday, June 27 at 11:59pm

Chapter 1
  • Density, Sig Figs, & Dimensional Analysis
  • Here is a YouTube playlist with Khan Academy videos to help you review sig figs
  • There is also some first year stuff about compounds, mixtures, homogeneous & heterogeneous mixtures and chemical reactions
  • Sciencegeek.net has great review activities; look at his Chapter 1 stuff for some great practice
Assignment
  1. Read the syllabus
  2. Log in to WebAssign & change your password
  3. Complete the WebAssign Tutorial and Chapter 1 Assignment
WebAssign is an online homework service that we will use to do our assignments.  Username is your first initial and your last name.  This is how Tony Stark would login:
  Username: tstark
  Institution: goldenvalley.ca
Password: apchemistry2014 (<--- change immediately since it is now public on the web)
Please email me immediately with questions or log in issues.  I leave for Vietnam on Sunday, June 22nd and will be unreachable for a few days.

DUE DATE #2 - FRIDAY, July 18 AT 11:59PM

Chapter 2
  • Atomic Structure
  • Atomic Weights
  • Periodic Table
  • Nomenclature (naming)
Resources
  • Golden Sheet of Nomenclature
  • My naming playlist on YouTube; these are mostly my first year chem lectures there are lots of good naming resources on the web
  • ScienceGeek.net's Chapter 2 review activities - these are great little practice exercises
Assignment
  1. Complete WebAssign for Chapter 2
  2. Join our class on Quizlet (click link & then you can login or create an account); Quizlet also has phone apps so you can study on the go
  3. Memorize polyatomic ions; use Quizlet and see flashcards above

DUE DATE #3 - Thursday, JUly 31 AT 11:59PM

Chapter 3
Here are the primary topics in Chapter 3.  They all should be review for you except empirical and molecular formulas. Since these topics are review, I have just posted links to videos and websites to help you review beyond your AP Chemistry book. Because the empirical/molecular formula stuff is new, I created some tutorials focusing specifically on those topics.
  • Stoichiometry
  • Limiting Reactants
  • Percent Composition
  • Empirical Formulas
  • Molecular Formulas from Empirical Formulas

Assignment
  1. Go to EDpuzzle and join our AP Chemistry class - click the gray button that says "I'm a new student", create a profile, then join our class using the code: epBOyb
  2. Complete the EDpuzzle Assignment: Molecular & Empirical Formulas (see below)
  3. Complete the EDpuzzle Assignment: Determining Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula (see below) <--- this one is still coming
  4. Complete the EDpuzzle Assignment: Empirical Formula - Molecular Formula (see below)
  5. Complete WebAssign for Chapter 3

The First Week of School

I will not give you an exam on the first day.  Your first exam will be on Friday and it will cover your summer assignment.
